Perhaps you just want to refresh the look of a old wood kitchen cabinet. It seem it is easy to put new stain on your wood kitchen cabinets, However this is not the case. The cabinets probably have a topcoat of polyurethane or lacquer, with the original stain underneath that. In order to stain again by the usual method, these coatings have to be removed. A simpler method would be to resurface the cabinets with wood veneer or wood-grain plastic laminate. Another possibility, which would eliminate much of the labor of removing the old finishes, would be to apply a new topcoat of varnish-stain such as Minwax Polyshades. This finish is available in many wood tones. As the name implies, it gives a stain and varnish finish at the same time and can be used over many old finishes without removing them. In general, it is only necessary to clean the old finish thoroughly to remove grease and wax and sand it lightly. But varnish-stains are tricky to use, and I recommend that you try it in an inconspicuous place, such as the inside of a cabinet door, to see if you like the results. Read and follow the directions carefully, of course. Read more on Cabinet Refacing
