Q: I'm about to head off to a big box store for some in stock kitchen cabinets for a rental unit that I own. I'm on a tight budget so I plan on buying unfinished cabinets. I need some advise on what is the best way to stain them. Should I use a brush or a rag to apply the stain? What type of finish should I apply to get the best results? These are oak cabinets. A: I prefer to use a brush to apply the oil stain and then use a rag to wipe up the excess - it is quicker than doing it all with a rag. When dry apply 3 coats of poly, sanding and dusting between coats.
