Before you visit kitchen cabinet store to find your dream kitchen, spend some time in your existing kitchen and ask yourself some questions - the answers will help you choose the perfect cabinets for your home.
- Would you like to change the mood of your kitchen from dark to light, or from traditional to contemporary?
- Would you like new flooring, countertops, appliances or lighting fixtures? If anything is worn, out of date or just not to your taste, consider replacing it along with the cabinets.
- Is the kitchen layout functional? For example, does the "work triangle" of sink, cooktop and refrigerator work well for you? (No single leg of the triangle should be less than four feet or greater than nine feet.) If not, now is a good time to consider moving the sink, cooktop or refrigerator.
- Do the existing cabinets actually encourage clutter? If so, you can curb kitchen clutter with new cabinets and clever design. Consider, for example, a full-height pantry with pullout shelves for dry goods. Look for storage trays, towel racks, work counters and trash bins that roll in and out for easy access. And for platters and pots, get at least one cabinet drawer that's deep and wide.
