Q: I need to replace the kitchen cabinets in a seasonal use 1972 MH. I was thinking of just making the cabinets, but I am concerned about the weight of the uppers. I think the studs are only 2X2's. I was thinking about just removing the paneling behind the existing cabinets and replacing with 3/4 CDX plywood. My thinking was that I could transfer some of the weight from the uppers directly to the floor. I'm not sure if I can attach to the ceiling, the existing cabinets are not. Any suggestions?
A: If installing 30" tall wall cabinets, you can install 2x4" hangrails between the studs. 30W cabinets are hung at 84". Hangrails can also be installed for base cabinets, which are installed at 34 1/2" from floor. Hangrails also give you a place to screw a cabinet in where there is no stud. I would think your idea of first attaching plywood to the wall would be the best way to go. You can not support the cabinets from the ceiling. The ceiling "truss" is constructed of two 1x2's with scrap paneling for gussets - no real support. If you buy ready made cabinets they will be slightly larger than the factory MH cabinets. If I remember correctly a MH base cabinet is 22" wide and a conventional cabinet is 24" wide. |
