If you’ve dreamed of building a kitchen full of cabinets, stop dreaming and start building. Here’s what you need to know to get custom results for half what stock cabinets cost.

For many home woodworkers, outfitting a kitchen with handcrafted cabinets is the dream project. Who hasn’t looked at stock cabinets built with particleboard, hotmelt glue and staples and thought, “I could build something a whole lot better than this for half the money.”

And they’re right. By building your own cabinets, you can upgrade materials and construction methods. You’re also not locked into “stock” sizes. The style, look, finish, and features are completely up to you. If you think about it, cabinets are just a bunch of boxes. The only real challenge is the size of such a project. And that’s manageable as long as you know where to get started and how to proceed.

On this site, we’ll walk you through how we built these cabinets and how they compare with stock cabinets purchased from a home center. And hopefully inspire you to consider building your own.

7 Steps to Paint Kitchen Cabinet Doors

7 Steps to Paint Kitchen Cabinet Doors

  1. Take cabinet doors off cabinets and remove all hardware.
  2. Clean thoroughly with dry TSP (from your paint store) in warm water. (Be sure to wear rubber gloves to avoid cracking the skin on your hands. )
  3. Rinse Thoroughly.
  4. Dry overnight. Next morning do a touch test. The surface should be dry and a bit rough. There should be no grease or chalky residue. If the doors are still greasy repeat step 2. If the doors have a chalk residue re-rinse them.
  5. Paint the cabinets with Z prime or Kilz primer. This will keep any grease that you couldn't remove from bleeding through the paint.
  6. Let dry for 2-4 hours.
  7. Cover with 2 coats of latex kitchen and bathroom semi-gloss or gloss. Let dry overnight between coats. Allow 2nd coat to dry at least one full day before re-hanging the doors.

Painting Kitchen Cabinets

3 steps of painting kitchen cabinets:

Step 1: Remove cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware. Drop the hardware in a box or can so that nothing gets lost; you can clean and polish it while the cabinets are drying. Place the doors and drawers in a dust-free area where they can stay several days while they're drying. Wash all surfaces with a strong detergent.

Step 2: Sand cabinet surfaces lightly with 100-grit sandpaper to dull the gloss and aid paint adhesion. Vacuum and wipe with a clean tack cloth (available at paint stores) to eliminate dust. Choose a water-based stain-resistant paint formulated for kitchens. It should be scrubable and contain a mildewcide against the high humidity of a kitchen.

Step 3: As a first coat, use a primer recommended for the type of paint you are using. Buy good-quality brushes to avoid streaks and errant bristles. When the primer is dry, lightly sand and wipe the cabinet surfaces again. Apply the first coat of finish paint, let it dry, sand lightly, and wipe again. A second finish coat should complete the job.

It is the time to Update the look of your kitchen by painting the cabinet, do it now!
